This new stage of the pilgrimage of trust on earth enabled young people from numerous countries to experience Slovenian hospitality and to deepen their faith. Each of the texts are a commentary on an excerpt from the Letter 2012: Towards a New Solidarity. Aware of the perils and the suffering that weigh upon humanity and the planet, we do not want to give in to fear and resignation. And yet a fine human hope is constantly threatened by disenchantment. Saturday 7 April 2012 Tomorrow morning we will be celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. At the end of the Eucharist, and throughout the day, we can exchange the Easter greeting “Christ is risen!” and the reply “He is risen indeed.” This feast is at the heart of our faith. Brother Roger used to say: “If Christ were not risen, we would not be here.” Yes, it is Jesus Christ who brings us together: the brothers of the Community, and you who are sharing for a few days our life here on the hill. Over 40 years later, young people visiting Taizé today find their attention drawn to exactly the same things. Downloads for preparation meetings: Notes for teachers and leaders (doc (...)

The first known act of the young German Franz Stock in favor of peace was his participation in 1926 in the meeting of Bierville, south of Paris, where ten thousand young people from all over Europe came together for peace. At Easter 1928, as a young seminarian, he moved to Paris to continue his studies. As his friend Joseph Folliet later wrote, “To welcome a German student at the theological faculty of Paris was something inconceivable for the mentality of 1928.” Ordained in 1932, he was (...)

A child holds a piece of wood tightly in his hand. But a thought takes hold of him: the wood will eventually rot. Now he has grabbed a rock, but he knows that the stone, too, is doomed to crumble. Here is an iron object. Finally, he believes he has something that will resist decomposition. As a child, Pierre (...)

Springtime for the soul in Chile. At the beginning of October, two of the brothers set out from Taizé to spend a month in Chile. Their goal was to bring a breath of fresh air to the pilgrimage of trust that we lived in December 2010. « El Alma que anda en amor, ni cansa ni se cansa » « The soul filled by love never tires others nor grows tired » When they arrived, the Chile they discovered was going through the trials of difficult political and social situations, marked above all by the (...)

A brother was invited to take part in the World Christian Forum which took place at Manado in Indonesia from October 4th to 7th, after that held at Limuru in Kenya in 2007. "There were about 300 participants from 65 countries, coming from the main streams of the Christian faith. One half of them belonged to the historical Churches and the other half to the charismatic, evangelical, and Pentecostal Churches. The theme was: "Living together in Jesus Christ, strengthened by the Holy Spirit." (...)

The Letter from Taizé is published quarterly. On this page, we are presenting some texts on the theme of the last issue, Desire for Forgiveness. Each of the texts are a commentary on an excerpt from the Letter from Chile. Every human being needs forgiveness just as much as daily bread. God gives it always, unconditionally, “the One who forgives all your sins.” Opening our hands in prayer is a simple gesture that can express our desire to welcome it. Joseph (Vietnam) During my time living (...)

Two young volunteers from Taizé recently returned from a visit to several parishes in Sweden. Here is an account of their journey. Two days ago we came back to Taizé after spending almost two weeks in Sweden. It was a new, important and beautiful experience for both of us. The reason for our journey to the far north of Europe was a small meeting organized in a village called Jönåker, about two hours from Stockholm. After visiting Taizé this summer, the young people of the Kiladalen parish asked (...)

Brother John is American and was born in Philadelphia. Brother Emile is Canadian (with a Chicago-born grandmother!). Both brothers have been part of the Taizé Community for over 35 years. Why was Chicago chosen to be the venue for the next Pilgrimage of Trust in May 2012? Br. Emile: Relations with Chicago go way back to the mid 1960's when a group of Taizé brothers and a few Franciscan friars lived together on the South Side of the city. This old friendship has been reactivated in the last (...)

Hello! I'm Inga, I'm 21 years old and I am studying Protestant Theology. This year I will be studying in Berlin and I have just moved to the city. Over the last years I have been in Taizé a number of times and this summer I stayed there for several weeks. I am very happy to be able to help with the preparations for the 34th European Meeting at the end of this year in Berlin. This blog will hopefully be a good possibility to share with you what is going on in the preparation centre, in the (...)

Responding to invitations from Lutheran, Orthodox and Catholic Church communities, two of the brothers were in Finland during the second half of September 2011. With 73.9 % of Finland covered by forest, it is not hard to imagine that the people also have a saying similar to the one in English: “You can't see the wood for the trees.” In Finnish it goes “Ei näe metsää puilta” and means being able to see only the parts and not the whole. This was certainly true when two of the brothers travelled (...)

Since 1998, Taizé sent humanitarian aid to North Korea several times when the country was severely afflicted by food shortages. This year 2011, three times, Taizé sent 260 tons of wheat flour and 120 tons of pasta through Operation Hope. These items were distributed among the very poor in the region of Siniju, Ryongchon, Yomju and Gesong. At the beginning of next year we would like to send a shipment of essential medical supplies and drugs. Could those who go to the European meeting in (...)

One of the brothers of the community was in Ireland in September-October 2011. He shares some of his impressions. Over the space of ten days my trip to Ireland took me to four corners of the island, beginning in Dublin, then with stops west, in Ennis, south, in Cork and New Ross and finally north, in and around Belfast. Each evening a meeting and prayer brought together people from the surrounding area. In a number of these places, prayers with Taizé songs are held on a regular basis. The (...)

As each year for the last five years, a week-long meeting, punctuated with times of prayer and sharing, has been held at Tiemcen, a little town in Algeria. These meetings are the result of a long friendship between the Taizé Community and the Church in Algeria, dating from the 1950s when several brothers stayed there, sharing the life of people living in shanty towns. When the country became independent, and with the growing demands of the welcome at Taizé, the brothers returned to France. (...)

Many people in Berlin are delighted to be welcoming the European meeting at the end of the year. Here are some messages in which they express their invitation, their joy in welcoming, their expectations and their hopes for this meeting. When people meet together, they contemplate the face of God. We forget this too often. I shall be happy with the common prayers and the times of sharing, and I hope that we can share joy with each other in spite of these difficult times. May the dynamism of (...)

This reading of the Epistle to the Colossians starts by exploring the circumstances in which it may have been written before introducing us to the central theme of St Paul's letter from prison, that of Christian maturity. The apostle sets out to confront everything that could cause his readers to doubt the fullness given to us in Christ. The Colossians, he explains, will be rooted and built up in Christ by living in a spirit of gratitude for the gift they have received. As they do so, they (...)

Thursday 25 August 2011 Last week we remembered Brother Roger's death, just six years ago. It was almost the same day that, sixty-five years earlier, in August 1940, Brother Roger had come here to Taizé for the first time. He was 25 years old, the same age as many of you. Why did he come to settle in this village? World War II had begun. He wanted his spiritual quest to be lived out in the midst of a difficult human situation, in the midst of the greatest suffering of the time. And he began (...)

Prayers with songs from Taizé exist in many places in South Africa. The prayers appearing on this page are regular prayers known to the brothers and in touch with the reality of the local Church in their area. The "pilgrimage of trust on earth" is not a movement in the formal sense of the word at all. So no one has a list of "members". It is often possible, however, to put people in touch with others in their locality. email Bergvliet Cape Town Bergvliet Methodist Church Prayer with (...)

Tuesday 16 August 2011 The evening of August 16th, Brother Alois remembered Brother Roger with this prayer: We praise you, God of love, for our brother Roger. Even though poor and vulnerable, he radiated peace of heart. He gave confidence to countless persons, both young and not-so-young. We would like to listen to his energetic call to simplicity of life, and learn from his passion for that mystery of communion which is the Church. And may your love renew the face of the earth! Thursday 11 August 2011 You have all come as pilgrims to Taizé. Several groups of you will continue your pilgrimage to Madrid, where World Youth Day is being held. With some brothers I will also go there next week. Some of you have come from far away. The most difficult trip was made by a group from Sweden. Their bus caught fire on the way. Fortunately the driver realized the danger. He was able to stop the bus alongside the highway and get everyone out. It was 1am. The bus was completely (...)

Thursday 4 August 2011 Three times a day we meet here in the church to turn together towards God. Common prayer is at the heart of our community life, and it is important to us brothers to share it with all of you. Even if God will always be beyond anything we can imagine, we can still turn towards him. To talk to him or just to remain in his presence. In the depths of the soul of each one of us, there is a prayer which we can formulate more or less well, but which God understands. God, (...)

Thursday 28 July 2011 These summer weeks there are so many of us, from so many countries and from different continents. The joy of being together makes us aware that a solidarity among all humans exists, and that it is possible to take responsibility for each other. Last week a young Palestinian said, “There are so many of us here and we are so different from each other, and yet we are one family.” Yes, Christ unites us in one communion. It's like a little Pentecost. It is the joy of the (...)

With the thousands of young adults gathered these days in Taizé, the brothers of the community have been praying in solidarity with the victims of the tragedy that has just struck Norway. Brother Alois has sent the following message to Church leaders and to friends in Norway (...)

Thursday 21 July 2011 Each week of the summer, young Orthodox Christians are among us. We are grateful for their presence. Western Christians need to be more open to the treasures of the Eastern Churches. Last Tuesday, Orthodox Christians celebrated an important holiday—the feast of St. Elijah. That great prophet lived eight centuries before Christ. Several stories of Elijah have come down to us in the Bible. One of them speaks to us in a special way. At a time when his life was in (...)

Nairobi, the “city under the sun”, is the metropolis of East Africa. It is an administrative, commercial and industrial centre, and a hub for road and air communications. The Kenyan capital hosts two United Nations agencies headquarters (Habitat and Environment) and a large number of international organisations, among them the All Africa Conference of Churches. After the 2008 stage of the Pilgrimage of Trust that took place in Nairobi, the Taizé Community was invited to follow up the work (...)

Thursday 14 July 2011 Every Thursday we meet after the evening prayer. It is a time to rejoice at being together on this hill of Taizé: being together to go to the wellsprings of faith. And we want to show that putting our trust in God is not an empty word, but that we commit ourselves resolutely to set out on this small way. I would like to greet you all personally, but there are too many of us. So in a few minutes the children will name all the countries represented and distribute (...)
